Accepting an invitation of the Polskie Stowarzyszenie Racjonalistów (Polish Society of Rationalists, PSR), Sanal Edamaruku toured Poland this July. It was both, a fascinating and insightful journey through the history of Poland and a lively and cordial exchange with rationalists all over the country. The dedicated and perfect organizer of the packed program was Kaja Bryx, president of the Silesia wing of PSR. Kaja and her husband Jacek Tabisz, well known lyricist and the organization’s president, accompanied their guest. Fruit of intense discussions during the journey was a Trilateral Agreement of Co-operation between the Polish Society of Rationalists, the Indian Rationalist Association and Rationalist International that was signed in the city of Wroclaw on 10th July and will open new dimensions of international rationalist cooperation.
The first of three weeks in Poland, Sanal Edamaruku spent in the small town Dobrzyń nad Wisłą in the house of Małgorzata Koraszewska and Andrzej Koraszewski, a veteran rationalist couple that played a significant role in building a strong and dynamic rationalist movement in Poland and is the driving force behind the portal Racjonalista.pl. Both Andrzej and Malgorzata have been nominated Honorary Associates of Rationalist International for their contributions.
During his journey, Sanal Edamaruku took part in a public debate in the on freedom of speech organised by the PSR in the Museum of Modern Arts in Warsaw. And he gave talks in Wroclaw, Katowice, Krakow, Szczecin, Poznan and Warsaw. He spoke about various aspects of religion, superstition, the Indian rationalist movement and about his personal experiences at the frontlines of the fight against unreason. Meeting with curious and enthusiastic audiences, it was never easy to come to an end. In all places, local rationalists loved to stay out for long hours of spirited discussion with the Indian guest.
Many may have shared the feelings that Jacek Tabisz described in his ‘Impressions about Sanal’s visit’: “Once he left, I realized that this is just the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship, which deserves the commitment of us all. Before this, many of us .... did not understand that the world is not only Europe and the US and that it is good and important for us to work in future together with colleagues from India... and many other countries. Moreover: achievements and the courage of the president of the Indian Rationalist Association speak for themselves ...”
