Henry Morgentaler (1923 - 2013, Canada)
Born in Poland in 1923, Henry Morgentaler was a survivor of the holocaust. Graduated in medicine from the University of Montreal in 1953, he became a leader of the pro-choice movement in Canada, was tried several times on charge of illegal abortion, and was instrumental in overturning Canada's abortion law. He was the first President of Humanist Association of Canada. In 2008, Morgentaler was awarded the Order of Canada "for his commitment to increased health care options for women, his determined efforts to influence Canadian public policy and his leadership in humanist and civil liberties organizations." Morgentaler died at the age of 90 in May 2013.
